Calacanis Offering Free Podcast Hosting

Posted by Andru Edwards

Someone needed to do it, and it looks like Jason Calacanis is the one making the plunge. According to Jason, in exchange for “advertising/a thank you” he is looking to host podcasts for free. I just dropped him an email asking for more details. Recently, we have been using CacheFly for hosting our podcast (which is a great service) - but we have quickly found that when you do video, storage becomes an issue. Jason - hit me up man.

Rizzn.net is an option. He’s experiencing some growing pains as he moves onto a new server (read: mp3s won’t upload instantly), but it’s a free option with unrestricted bandwidth and storage (as far as I can tell) for your casts, as well as RSS feed creation.

I think this is an excellent idea - one of the smartest propositions I have heard anyone make recently.

Think about for a minute ..... lots of people have Podcasts .... more are made every day...Podcasts are popular and when they are downloaded it consumes lots of bandwidth; if your Podcasts are popular someone hosting the Podcasts can run up a big bill. When you can place your podcast in a nice safe place and then promote it.....you can get a Win Win situation - free hosting of a big MP3 ...your own Podcast and Jason gets to make money of the advertising he sells PLUS his domain gets a TON of traffic........

Maybe I’m wrong .... but I really think some one could make a lot of money off of this idea. While hosting the Podcasts - I’d also catogorize them and make sure they were well optimized (ie: ID3 tags, titles, descriptions).

While it’s impossible to beat free, I will say that from a videocast perspective we have been very happy with MoveDigital.  They have direct torrent support, support for streaming to mobile phones and will allow files such as 1080p to be downloaded to massive iTunes users.  I know I sound like a PR person for MoveDigital, but I’m not and I get nothing from them.

Like I said, can’t beat free, but if you’re looking for features at a great price, it’s hard to beat MoveDigital.com.  Really, I don’t work for them… Just like them smile Hey, I’m a technology evangelist, I can’t help it.

By the way, I don’t think the ‘remember my personal info’ section is working on the comments.  Could be my system, but I figured I would mention something.
