SeaWorld orca trainers are crazy!

Maybe it’s just me, but I would have a real problem swimming underwater with the animal called the killer whale, which can destroy sharks. I’d have an even bigger problem putting my feet on its nose underwater, while it swam towards the surface at top speed, only to jump out and launch me into the air. Look at the picture above - it was taken while we were at SeaWorld Orlando (which thoroughly enjoyed.) I mean, look at how high that killer whale launched the trainer. Don’t get me wrong, the show is definitely a sight to behold…but, man…crazy.

By the way, if you ever get a chance to see these creatures up close, they are truly magnificent and beautiful.

I myself am not hip on being that close to animals that can hurt you - a whale is awesome but they’re only tame (at best) not domesticated.

On the other hand my wife and older son are crazy about animals that are tame - she owns a cockatoo that can easily take off one’s finger.

That bird and I have a mutual non-aggression pact - but it’s a trust and verify relationship.

Yeah they are crazy. (thats my dream job) i was at sea world this weekend. an educator told me that the trainers bond with whales for about a year and if one of the whales dont like that person. that person can not get in the water EVER. So that person could work with the dolphins or what ever.  so not only is the trainer chose by ALL the whales but that trainer is bonding with the whales for a year . pretty good precautions. the killer whale is actually in the dolphin family they arent really whales at all. so they are pretty social

That’s my dream job, and even though its insane its one of the most amazing things in the world!

they are crazy!!! i would never do that when they sort os scare me just looking at them!!! ha!!!!

dude thats crazy it would be awsome if it were dolphins but NOT killer whales wink

They are dolphins, orcas are given the name killer whales because they kill whales along with many other creatures. Different pods (groups) live in different areas and only eat certain things so some orcas have never eaten a seal or a shark and some have never eaten types of fish. Also those pods don’t interbred, it’s a very upscale society.

It is amazing, isn’t it?

If it makes you feel better, they were originally dubbed “whale killers” by sailors who witnessed transient orcas killing and eating larger whales.  Over the years it got switched to “killer whale”, which is rather misleading as no wild orca has ever attacked a human.

Also, the orcas in captivity are resident orcas that eat only fish.  They are one of three genetically and physically distinct subspecies of orcas that have not interbred in over 100,000 years.  The aforementioned transients are the ones that you see eating seals, porpoises, whales, and other mammals.  The rarely seen offshores mostly eat sharks and- as their name suggests- live way out at sea for the most part.  All three types can be distinguished by the shape of their dorsal fins.

They are even more amazing than most people realize!  smile
