Check out this fantastic video, made by the Society for Geek Advancement. A bunch of my friends are featured in it, which makes it doubly awesome. I agree, whole-heartedly, with the message set forth!
SMC Seattle April 09: Andru Edwards talks social media
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Business, Technology, Videos
I hit up yesterday’s Social Media Club meetup (co-hosted by SEOMoz), and talked with a bunch of interesting people who had a lot of questions for me. Of course, my friend Kenji Onozawa happened to be on hand, and busted out his Creative Vado so that he could shoot a quick interview. We talk about the Seattle tech scene, Gear Live, and Seattle Mind Camp in this video.
KING 5 News: Andru Edwards talks Twitter on OnStar
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Business, Technology, Videos
I appeared on KING 5 News here in Seattle to talk about the Twitter on Onstar story that we broke on Gear Live. The segment can be seen above.
Peter Svensson over at the Associated Press did a story recently on people who physically moved their place of residence, solely for the purposes of faster or better broadband. He interviewed me for the piece as well, focusing on my move out of Seattle to just north of Seattle so that I could get Verizon FiOS. As I said in the article, I never looked back. I now rock out at 50/20 speeds, where before with Comcast I was stuck with 8/0.768. Comcast recently upped their speeds to 16/2 in our area, which still doesn’t even compare with the 50/20 I’m enjoying. Hit the link below for the full piece.

Well, look what we have here. The local Seattle newpaper, the Post-Intelligencer, has named me as their Geek of the Week in the Seattle Tech Report. They asked me a few questions, seemingly to measure my geek cred, and I had to admit that I wasn’t into either Star Trek or Star Wars, which I thought would have immediately removed me from consideration. Hit the link below to check it out.
By the way, speaking of Seattle and geeks, be sure to check out Seattle Mind Camp - it happens next month, and is going to be an amazing time. If you are a geek (about anything), make sure to be there!

Is Bebo using your AIM credentials behind your back?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Blogging, Technology

Here’s an oddity for you - it seems that Internet site Bebo took control of the AIM account of Teresa Valdez Klein just long enough to send me an invitation to check out her Bebo profile. I immediately realized that she wasn’t even online, and even tried responding - to no avail! When I asked her about it, it turns out that while she was signing up for the service, she put in her AIM credentials so that Bebo could find any other friends who were members so that they could hook up, and I would assume it would also allow you to pick and choose who you’d like to send an IM invite to. When she was at that step, something went wrong on Bebo’s end and timed out. She closed the browser, and I got the IM.
So whether it was on purpose, or an error - Bebo devlopers, it’s not cool. You should probably throw in some sort of safety into your code so that, in the event of a timeout, it errs on the side of caution instead of on the side of Bebo advertising. Kthx.

So, Expression Engine 1.6 is set to be released very soon, and it looks to be one of the most significant releases yet. We already manage multiple sites under one installation, but it is a bit of a hack (although, an easy one.) The new release brings about a Multiple Site Manager add-on, which we at Gear Live are more than ready to jump in to.
In the meantime, we figured we would mess with a few images of EllisLab CEO Rick Ellis, to see if we could win ourselves a copy of the MSM add-on. If not, it’s all good. Messing with Rick seems to be turning into a pastime…
As you can see above, we are very excited about EE 2.0, so we made a point to share that in the image. Two more images after the jump.

The Apple Remote Desktop Vicious Vortex Death Spiral
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Personal, Technology

Apparently, this is what happens when you mess around and leave Apple Remote Desktop running on one computer connected to another, and then go on the computer you are controlling and accidentally try to control the one that is controlling the one you are on. Did you get that?
What you have here is what we call the Apple Remote Desktop Vicious Vortex Death Spiral…of Doom.
I tried to close it, but to no avail, each and every sub-window had to redraw and refresh everything I was doing, and I was getting nowhere fast. I was finally able to minimize the Remote Desktop window on the original machine (iMac) from the second computer (MacBook Pro) and then Forced Quitted ARD that way. All was then well.
Be careful out there.
Gear Live’s The Bleeding Edge Show Wins At The Vloggies!
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Blogging, Business, Technology
I have no idea how we pulled this off, especially with stiff competition like Diggnation, Command-N, Systm, CrankyGeeks, and others - but we did it. Gear Live’s technology video podcast, The Bleeding Edge, won the award for Best Technology Video Blog. This is truly amazing, and an honor, and let’s us know that despite all the silliness and fun we are having doing what we do, there is a movement happening, and we are honored to be a part of it. Check the video above for a nice, truncated recap of The Vloggies. Oh, and yes - we couldn’t make it, and we didn’t send a video acceptance speech because, quite frankly, we didn’t think we would win!
